Wire Spider Web Necklace DIY
Whilst I am not the biggest fan of actual spiders, I have to admit that their webs are beautiful, especially when they hang from plants and are decorated with tiny drops of dew! Add this to my campaign to make Halloween crafts that are pretty rather than garish and we have a delicate wire spider web necklace DIY, complete with beaded dew!
You will need:
–0.8mm / 20 gauge wire
–0.4mm / 26 gauge wire
–Size 11 seed beads in silver lined clear or crystal AB
–Chainnose and roundnose pliers and cutters
How to make:
- Cut 3 x 10cm (4″) lengths of the 0.8mm (20 gauge) wire and 1 x 50cm (20″) of the 0.4mm (26 gauge) wire. Holding the thicker wires together, wrap the thinner wire tightly around them 3 times. Trim off the short tail, leaving the longer length to make our web.
2.Bend the two wires on either side outwards so you have 6 spokes. Don’t worry if they aren’t completely equal or are a bit wobbly.
3.Take the tail of thinner wire and wrap it once around one of the spokes
4.Take the wire to the next spoke and wrap it once around. Repeat this procedure, wrapping the thinner wire around each spoke as you move around. If the wire comes out underneath a spoke, start by taking it over the next one. Alternating in this way means there won’t be a back or front to the web.
5.After you have gone around once, start adding a bead on to the wire before wrapping it around. Keep the wire taut, but try not to pull it so tightly that the it bends the spokes out of position.
6.Keep going until your web is the desired size or you run out of wire!
7.Secure the wire by wrapping it a couple of times around the last spoke before trimming off the excess.
8.Cut each spoke wire so there is just 1cm left
9.Grip the very end of each spoke wire with round nose pliers and roll a loop sideways. Be careful not to pull the wire out (yes, that happened and I had to poke it back though!)
10.Straighten 1 loop so it sits centrally to attach to a necklace chain
11.Use a jump ring to attach the spider web to your chain (take a look at this post if you need a refresher on using jump rings)
You could make another two wire spider webs and have matching earrings, or make a giant version to use as a decoration for a Halloween party!
